Parliamentarians Raise Alarms

Lawmakers featuring a previous cabinet member who led the worker protection legislation raised objections about the concession declared by ministers.

Cabinet members have removed the initiative to scrap the 24-month eligibility timeframe for workers to file wrongful termination cases and permit them to act beginning day one in a new job, to facilitate passing the bill through lawmakers.

Government Impasse

The bill was caught in a confrontation among upper and lower chambers regarding the initial proposal to offer labor protections on day one, as well as measures to outlaw predatory flexible hour arrangements.

Administration Defense

The education secretary explained there was a "very real prospect" the execution of the labor reform proposal would have been delayed without the cabinet's decision regarding a U-turn over immediate safeguards against unfair dismissal.

"Consultation has occurred concerning the matter about wrongful termination and the duration requirement among companies, trade unions and government, and following that discussion understanding has been reached concerning future direction, that represents positive development."

She emphasized that "It means that the eligibility timeframe will decrease from two years to six months, and that runs alongside crucial immediate protections regarding health-related payments and around parental leave."
