Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the judge said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, prompting him to implement a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
